BOOKS ABOUT FEELINGS TO NURTURE EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Books are great tools for teaching young children emotional literacy skills. Through stories, characters show what feelings look like and model how to react to emotions. Reading a book together lets you engage with your child in low-key chats about feelings supporting your little learner on their way to understanding their own feelings and expressing them as a key part of growing.
5 REASONS WHY READING WITH YOUR KIDS IS IMPORTANT:
1. IT STRENGTHENS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR KIDS
Did you know? If you read together for 20 minutes a day, 7 days a week, you get more than 121 hours of bonding time with your kids every year. It not only allows parent and child to develop life long bonds but also helps your child feel close to you, and the feelings of love and attention encourage positive growth and development.
2. READING PROVIDES NEW EXPERIENCES FOR KIDS
3. READING IMPROVES VOCABULARY AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS
4. READING WITH YOUR KIDS HELPS IMPROVE THEIR CONCENTRATION
Story time helps reward kids for focusing. Kids gradually learn to sit still and listen quietly so that they can focus on the story, thus develop longer attention spans.
5. READING HELPS KIDS DEVELOP A LIFE LONG LOVE OF READING
By cuddling together with a book your child learns that Reading is FUN and that they are the most important thing in your life.

TEACHING KIDS TO READ MAPS
Knowing how to read a map is an essential skill for kids and adults. Not only do you need to know how to find out where you are, but you need to be able to navigate safely to your destination. Now more than ever we’ve become heavily reliant on technology. Our phones and GPS devices are great (when they work), but you shouldn’t be fully dependent on devices when you’re out adventuring. Knowing how to read a map could save your life!
Learning to read and use a map teaches kids spatial skills. Spatial thinking and spatial awareness are some of the most important skills that students will develop as they learn how to read a map and about geography. Kids who develop robust spatial thinking skills will be at an advantage in our increasingly global and technological society.
I am a firm believer that kids learn best via experience so this gives them a chance to explore and learn at the same time. Whether that’s incorporating maps in your outdoor adventures or using them to aid in fun imaginative play with treasure hunts, geocaching, and scavenger hunts. They’re having fun, being active outside, and learning an essential outdoor skill. As a parent, you are rewarded with watching those skills develop and evolve!
